Mindfulness Of Breathing

Btw, I just sent you an email! Check your inbox (or spam folder!) for the very first lesson of the mindfulness of breathing email course. Look for an email titled, "[YCM] - Your quiz result... Here's what's next!"

The main goal of mindfulness of breathing is to collect and center yourself - your energy, thoughts, and focus - by connecting to the rhythmic and natural flow of the breath.

In other words, it's an openness of being that stays engaged, connected, and aware. By doing so, we’re learning to develop both awareness and focus through release and letting go.

Benefits of Mindfulness Of Breathing

Mindfulness of breathing has a unique combination of benefits that make it particularly effective:

It's Highly Observational

We're tuning into the breath that's already there and learning to remain mindful to help keep us centered. This kind of engagement causes high levels of focus, concentration, and collectedness.

Its Focus Is Narrow

Connecting to the breath where we feel it the clearest gives us an area to center our focus on while we observe the various sensations that are present. This allows for a greater sense of release and ease.

It Rebalances Awareness & Attention

Mindfulness directly supports and leads to better concentration. Rather than focus on just one, we're blending the two together in a way that allows for higher potential, greater experiences, and a more natural technique.

It Promotes Less Reactivity

By practicing mindfulness, we become more aware of what we're doing and why we're doing it. This type of present-level awareness happens alongside any actions, thoughts, or experiences!

"No matter where you go, or what you do, you can sit and connect with the breath. And when you do, you connect with a very ancient lineage that has practiced this technique for thousands of years."

Mindfulness Of Breathing At A Glance

We'll dive into all the details of how to engage the breath in the email course, but here's what it all comes down to:

1. The Core structure

This is an exercise in releasing and letting go of everything but an awareness of what you’re doing and the sensations of the breath.

But we don't want to force anything! If you notice yourself starting to control the breath or over-involve yourself, just release that need and desire, find that natural rhythm again, and gently tune back in.

2. Developing mindfulness

Mindfulness is like a gatekeeper, constantly watching the contents of the mind to help keep you on course. It's something we become, as opposed to something we do.

It's clearly knowing what you’re actively doing and what’s happening at this very moment. It’s a type of present-level awareness that happens alongside any action, thought, or experience.

3. Personal variations

We’re going to look at four different variations that you can apply to mindfulness of breathing. Each one engages the senses differently and supports the core practice.

You're going to learn how to apply a visual-based approach, a feeling-based approach, a sound-based approach, and a counting-based approach. No matter what your skill set is, you'll find a way to engage with the breath in a way that works for you!

I always thought meditation was about concentrating on the breath until I did this course. Now I see there's so much more to it than that.
